2012.04.12 Thursday Rome in Ruins

Starting on an overcast day, we make for the Forum and Palatine Hill which cover ancient Rome.  I won't go into history, but the architecture is startling and massive.  The Romans built on a large scale with the buildings reaching 50 metres and taller.  Without going into history too deeply, a lot of ancient Rome was desecrated and stripped of its marble and other stone materials by an offshoot of the Jewish religion group known as Christians, to build their own temples.  After a nice light lunch at the Enoteca Cavour restaurant; great food recommended by Rick with unfortunately, benches made of slats and spaced wide enough to be uncomfortable, we took the Hop-On, Hop-Off bus from the Coliseum across the Tiber to Vatican City and then back to Trevi Fountain.  The Trevi Fountain was incredibly beautiful and incredibly crowded.  From there we walked back to the Victor Emmaneul monument, referred to locally as the wedding cake on Capitol Hill, climbed the Michelangelo staircase to the top of capital hill and had a fantastic panoramic view of the city.  We then continued to the top of the Victor Emmanuel monument. 

We then went into Santa Maria in Aracoeli which is built on the site where Emperor Augustus had a premonition of the coming of Mary and Christ and I lit a candle in memory of my parents.  As we were descending the steps to city hall, we were met by a protest being set-up (don't know what about) and Gail was hit in the head by a tent.  Ted wanted to stay and find out what was happening, but the sight of riot police incited Gail to drag him off.
