2012.05.17 Thursday - the longest day

With my taxi booked for 0530h for my trip to the airport on to Munich and then on to Canada and back home, I settled into bed forgetting about the celebrating out my window of the previous evening.  That did not last long!  Obviously the night before, not all the students were out - probably not finished their final exam because the partying was in full swing all night long!  I got maybe 2 1/2 hours sleep - finally giving up at 0400h, getting up, showering and watching infomercials in Polish for women's undergarments - the only channel broadcasting!  My trip home involved flying to Munich, Toronto, Montreal and then on to Charlottetown, arriving more than 24 hours after I left at 0030h on Friday morning.  The trip and the connections went well and on the overseas flight, I ended up getting a bulk head seat with about 2.5 metres of legroom!

As is usual with these trips, you learn something new every time.  You can't avoid all problems and anticipate all situations, such as the rotating strikes by TrenItalia (train company).  It would have been a little less hectic if we both would have had a mobile.

З моєї таксі замовити для 0530h для моєї поїздки в аеропорт в Мюнхені, а потім в будинку Канади і назад, я оселився в ліжку забувають про святкування мого вікна ввечері попереднього дня. Con mi taxi reservado para 0530h para mi viaje al aeropuerto a Munich y luego a casa de Canadá y de regreso, me acomodé en la cama olvidándose de la. La celebración por la ventana de la noche anterior Eso no durará mucho tiempo! Es evidente que la noche anterior, no todos los estudiantes estaban fuera - probablemente no terminar su examen final, porque la fiesta estaba en pleno apogeo durante toda la noche! Tengo tal vez 2 1/2 horas de sueño - finalmente renunciar a las 0400h, levantarse, ducharse y viendo infomerciales en polaco para la ropa interior de mujeres - el único canal de radiodifusión! Mi viaje a casa volando involucrados a Munich, Toronto, Montreal y luego en Charlottetown, llegando a más de 24 horas después de que la izquierda en el 0030h viernes por la mañana. El viaje y las conexiones de las que salió bien y en el vuelo en el extranjero, que terminó siendo un asiento a granel con la cabeza cerca de 2,5 metros de espacio para las piernas!

Como es habitual en estos viajes, se aprende algo nuevo cada vez. Usted no puede evitar todos los problemas y anticipar todas las situaciones, tales como las huelgas rotatorias por Trenitalia (compañía de trenes). Hubiera sido un poco menos agitado si ambos hubieran tenido un teléfono móvil.

2012.05.16 Wednesday - Wroclaw, Poland

I played the tourist today.  Wroclaw (pronounced Wrotzwav) is a beautiful city.  I had a great time exploring and spent time in a jazz club talking with German tourists.  It all started with one of them saying to me "I guess next year you will have the Euro too?"  To which I replied - no, in Canada we quite like our dollar!  I would certainly like to go back and explore the rest of the city.  Trying to speak Polish and sorting from Ukrainian certainly left me drained.





Jugué el turista de hoy. Wroclaw (pronunciado Wrotzwav) es una ciudad hermosa. Tuve un gran tiempo explorando y pasó un tiempo en un club de jazz de hablar con turistas alemanes. Todo comenzó con uno de ellos que me decía: "Creo que el año que viene tendrá el euro también?" A lo que respondí - no, en Canadá nos acaba de gustar nuestro dólar! A mi me gustaría volver atrás y explorar el resto de la ciudad. Tratar de hablar polaco y la clasificación de Ucrania sin duda me dejó agotado.

Я грав туристичних сьогодні. Вроцлав (вимовляється Wrotzwav) дуже гарне місто. Я чудово провів час на вивчення і провів деякий час в джаз-клубі говорили з німецькими туристами. Все почалося з одного з них сказав мені: "Я думаю, наступного року у вас буде Євро теж?" На що я відповіла - ні, в Канаді ми дуже подобається наш долар! Я, звичайно, хотіли, щоб повернутися і досліджувати решту міста. Намагаючись говорити по-польськи і сортування від українських, звичайно, залишив мене вичерпано.

2012.05.15 Tuesday - to Poland

My plane was later than I originally thought - difference in the original document to the final.  Actually a good thing, considering Monday night was pretty late.  At the new airport, just reopened after their first run-through, everything seemed fine until boarding time.  The first group boarded the bus to go to the aircraft and travelled the great distance of some 20 to 30 metres and stopped at the aircraft.  We boarded the bus, but did not move.  Rumours were flying - from there being a leak in the engine, to needing a part from Warsaw (it was a LOT flight) to waiting for a connecting flight.  Actually, I go with the theory that their credit card was declined because the AV gas truck went out to the plane 3 times!  Things got ugly when about a half dozen drunken Ukrainian Americans shouting and threatening the gate staff.  The staff was obviously young, new and inexperienced and further problems were averted when airport security came and stood off to the side.

The plane was late (to Warsaw), so I missed my connection to Wroclaw and caught a later one.  When I arrived at my hotel address, I found out it was an apartment co-operative which is a central booking office with apartments around Wroclaw.  From there, I had to drag my suitcases and myself 10 blocks to the centre of town and up stairs to my apartment.  The area is in the student zone.  With exams finished, they were partying all night.  I probably got 4 hours sleep.

Мій літак був пізніше, ніж спочатку передбачалося - різниця у вихідному документі у фінал. Насправді добре, враховуючи, в понеділок увечері було досить пізно. У новому аеропорту, тільки відкрився після першого прогону, все було нормально, поки посадка. Перша група сіла в автобус, щоб перейти на літак і відправився великій відстані близько 20 до 30 метрів і зупинився на літак. Ми сіли в автобус, але не рухатися. Чутки літали - від наявності витоку в двигуні, в необхідності частину з Варшави (було багато польотів) в очікуванні рейсу. Насправді, я йду з теорією, що їх кредитна карта була відхилена, так як AV вантажівка газ вийшов на літак в 3 рази! Все стало потворним, коли близько півтора десятків п'яних українських американців кричати та погрожувати воротам персоналу. Співробітники, очевидно, молодих, нових і недосвідчених і подальші проблеми були відвернені, коли безпека аеропорту прийшов і стояв осторонь.

Літак запізнився (у Варшаві), так що я пропустив свій зв'язок з Вроцлав і зловили через один. Mi avión fue más tarde de lo que se pensaba originalmente - diferencia en el documento original a la final. En realidad una cosa buena, teniendo en cuenta lunes por la noche era bastante tarde. En el nuevo aeropuerto, acaba de reabrir después de su primer recorrido, todo parecía estar bien hasta el momento del embarque. El primer grupo abordó el autobús para ir a la aeronave y la distancia recorrida grandes de unos 20 a 30 metros y se detuvo en la aeronave. Abordamos el bus, pero no se movió. Los rumores volaban - de la existencia de una fuga en el motor, a la necesidad de una parte de Varsovia (que era un vuelo LOT) a la espera de un vuelo de conexión. En realidad, voy con la teoría de que su tarjeta de crédito ha sido rechazada debido a que el camión cisterna de gas AV salió al plano 3 veces! Las cosas se pusieron feas cuando una media docena de estadounidenses ucranianos borrachos gritando y amenazando al personal de la puerta. El personal era, obviamente, joven, nuevo y sin experiencia, y más problemas se evitaron cuando la seguridad aeroportuaria vino y se puso a un lado.

El avión llegó tarde (a Varsovia), así que me perdí mi conexión a Wroclaw y atrapó uno posterior. Cuando llegué a mi dirección de hotel, me di cuenta que era un apartamento cooperativo, que es una central de reservas de apartamentos alrededor de Breslavia. A partir de ahí, tuve que arrastrar las maletas y yo 10 cuadras del centro de la ciudad y las escaleras hasta mi apartamento. El área es en la zona de estudiante. 2012.05.14 Monday - back to Lviv

Roman drove me to Ternopil city and I took the bus from there to Lviv as I was leaving for Poland on Tuesday.  Met an interesting fellow at reception in the hotel.  He was originally from Manchester, spent 5 years in Toronto, had a family there, has been in Melbourne, Australia for the last 8 years and has/had a family there and was in Lviv to meet a woman he had met on the internet!  No mention if he had a family in Manchester.   We went out for a few beer.

Roman me llevó a Ternopil ciudad y tomé el autobús desde allí a Lviv, cuando me iba a Polonia el martes. Alcanzamos un tipo interesante en la recepción en el hotel. Era originario de Manchester, pasó 5 años en Toronto, tenía una familia allí, ha sido en Melbourne, Australia durante los últimos 8 años y ha / tenía una familia allí y estaba en Lviv conocer a una mujer que había conocido en el Internet! No se menciona si él tenía una familia en Manchester. Fuimos a tomar una cerveza pocos.

Роман відвіз мене в місто Тернопіль, і я взяв звідти автобусом до Львова, як я їхав до Польщі у вівторок. Зустрів цікавий хлопець на рецепції в готелі. 2012.05.13 Sunday - and we ate!

Sunday, the family met at Volodia's place and pretty much ate for the whole day!  Great food and conversation.  I would like to thank the whole family in Ukraine for their hospitality!  I had a great time!

Неділя, сім'ї зустрілися на місці Володі, і дуже багато їв за весь день! Відмінна їжа і розмова. Я хотів би подякувати всю сім'ю в Україну за гостинність! Я прекрасно провів час!

Domingo, la familia se reunió en el lugar de Volodia y casi se comió durante todo el día! La comida y la conversación. Me gustaría dar las gracias a toda la familia en Ucrania por su hospitalidad! Me lo pasé genial!

2012.05.12 Saturday - Kam'ianky and Molchanivka

Saturday - and what a day!  +30C!  Stepan and I took off for Kam'ianky and Molchanivka, the towns that the Kulbaba families emigrated from.  We spoke to several people and learned that one family was now in Pennsylvania at a wedding.  I left behind business cards and a copy of the family tree - I hope they will respond.  One fellow we spoke to was a few months short of his 100th birthday and was called in from the garden - he was hoeing it!  I also took pictures of headstones in Molchanivka and will start working on the information on them.

Субота - і те, що в день! +30 С! Степан і я зняв для Кам'янки і Молчанівка, міст, Кульбаба сім'ї емігрували з. Ми говорили з декількома людьми і дізнався, що одна сім'я в даний час в штаті Пенсільванія на весіллі. Я залишив візитні картки і копію родоводу - Я сподіваюся, що вони дадуть відповідь. Sábado - y qué día! 30 C! Stepan y me quité de Kam'ianky y Molchanivka, los pueblos que las familias emigraron de Kulbaba. Hemos hablado con varias personas y se enteró de que una familia se encuentra ahora en Pennsylvania, en una boda. Dejé atrás las tarjetas de visita y una copia del árbol genealógico - Espero que responder. Un compañero que habló fue unos meses antes de su cumpleaños número 100 y se llamó desde el jardín - lo estaba cavando! También tomé fotos de las lápidas en Molchanivka y empezará a trabajar en la información sobre ellos.

2012.05.11 Friday - Chabarivka

Stepan took me to the county records office in Husiatyn, the county seat.  There were limited records and did not provide the information I wanted, but since on examining my notes, I have other lines of enquiry to pursue. 

Just what do the elderly do in Ukraine?  ¿Qué personas de edad se ocupan en Ucrania?  Що літні люди в Україну роблять?



Степан відвів мене в офіс округу записів в Husiatyn, округу. Існували обмеженою запису і не надавати інформацію, я хотів, але так як на розгляд мої замітки, у мене є інші напрямки розслідування проводити.

Stepan me llevó a la oficina del condado registros en Husiatyn, la sede del condado. Había un registro completo y no proporcionar la información que quería, pero ya en el examen de mis notas, tengo otras líneas de investigación a seguir.

2012.05.10 Thursday - Ternopil

Spent the morning in the Oblast (provincial) Archives where I did not learn anything new.  After lunch, Oleh drove me to Chabarivka where I visited with family.

Pasamos la mañana en los oblast (provincia) de Archivos en el que no aprender nada nuevo. Después del almuerzo, Oleh me llevó a Chabarivka donde estuve con la familia.

Провела ранок в області (обласні) архіви, де я не дізнався нічого нового. Після обіду, Олег відвіз мене в Chabarivka, де я був з родиною.

2012.05.09 Wednesday - Lviv to Ternopil

Taras and his father-in-law Ivan picked me up in Lviv and took me to their place in for lunch.  Then it was to check into the hotel and have dinner with Oleh and Hanna.

Тарас і його батько в законі Іван підняли мене у Львові і взяли мене на своє місце в обід. Тоді це був час, щоб перевірити в готелі, а потім пообідати з Олегом і Ханнi.

Taras y su padre, Iván-en-ley me recogió en Lviv y me llevó a su lugar en el almuerzo. Luego fue a la hora de registrarse en el hotel y más tarde a cenar con Oleh y Hanna.

2012.05.08 Tuesday - more research

It was a day of research at the oblast (provincial) Library as well as showing support to hunger striking friend Mykola on the front lines of the Free Julia Tymoshenko camp-in.  Later it was nice to have a home cooked meal with Mykola and Sandy.



Це був день дослідження в області (обласні) бібліотеки, а також продемонструвати підтримку на голодовку Микола друг на лінії фронту вільної Юлії Тимошенко в таборі. Пізніше було приємно мати вдома приготовлену їжу з Миколою і Сандра.

Fue un día de la investigación en el oblast (provincia) Biblioteca, así como mostrar su apoyo a Mykola amigo en huelga de hambre en las primeras líneas de la Free Julia Tymoshenko en el campamento. Más tarde fue agradable para disfrutar de una comida casera con Mykola y Sandra.

2012.05.07 Monday - work day

This was a day for work.  I spend a good part of the day pouring over Birth, Marriage, Death records in the National Archives.  Later in the afternoon, I met with Senior Consular Assistant at the Canadian Consulate to discuss how Ukrainian Canadian Genealogy Groups can assist Ukrainians in locating family in Canada.  And, Carl & Rhea - I did sign the Consular Guest Book (;-)

Because the weather has been so great, the heavens opened up just as I was going to dinner!'

Це був день для роботи. Я проводжу велику частину дня заливки на народження, шлюб, смерті записів в Національний архів. Ближче до вечора, я зустрівся зі старшим помічником Консульський в канадському консульстві, щоб обговорити українські канадської групи Генеалогія може допомогти українцям у пошуку сім'ї в Канаді. І, Карл і Рея - я підписав книгу Консульський гість (;-)

Este fue un día de trabajo. Me pasan una buena parte del día de verter más de Nacimiento, Matrimonio, partidas de defunción en los Archivos Nacionales. Por la tarde, me reuní con el Superior Asistente Consular en el Consulado de Canadá para discutir la forma de Ucrania Grupos Genealogía canadienses pueden ayudar a los ucranianos en la localización de la familia en Canadá. Y, Carl y Rhea - que ha firmado el Libro de Visitas Consulares (;-)

Debido a que el clima ha sido tan grande, los cielos se abrieron justo cuando iba a cenar! "

2012.05.06 Sunday - Lviv Days continue

The celebration of Lviv Days continues with the main streets blocked off and entertainment everywhere.  I first checked on the hunger strikers, then met a young man who is the friends of friends and we had a great chat over cappuccino.  I then went to the King Cross shopping centre, one of the largest in Lviv.  I had to pick up a few things.  I picked up some antiperspirant and a bottle of cherry brandy among other things.  The antiperspirant cost me around $4, the brandy was about $3.75!  Most of the day was spent wandering the downtown area listening to music.

Святкування Днів Львова триває з головних вулиць перекрили і розваг у всьому світі. Спочатку я перевірив на голодуючих, то познайомилася з молодим чоловіком, який друзі друзів, і ми чудово провели бесіди за кавою зі збитими вершками. Потім я вирушив в King Cross торгового центру, одного з найбільших у Львові. Я повинен був забрати деякі речі. Я взяв кілька антиперспірантів і пляшка вишневої наливки серед інших речей. Антиперспірант коштував мені близько $ 4, коньяк близько $ 3.75! Велику частину дня була витрачена блукаючих центрі міста прослуховування музики.

La celebración de los Días de Lviv continúa con las principales calles bloqueadas y el entretenimiento en todas partes. La primera vez que vigilaba a los huelguistas de hambre, y luego conoció a un joven que es de los amigos de los amigos y tuvimos una gran charla sobre capuchino. 2012.05.05 Saturday - and the band played on

Last night after I posted my blog, music started outside, and because it was good - a mixture of classical rock and Ukrainian, I went out to enjoy the concert in the main square in front of the hotel.



And this morning, much to my surprise, they gave me a parade when I stepped out the door of the hotel.  Bands marched, music played, dancers danced - it was overwhelming!  I was appreciative and quite happy.  I'm sure the receptionist was wrong when she said it was for Lviv Days!  Anyway, there were concerts going on everywhere during the day and into the evening.

This afternoon I met with Ivan Svarnyk, former director in the Archives and now head of the Library, who addressed our genealogy group in Ottawa a number of years ago and his brother Mykola who teaches at the University.

The day also has the political parties out, including the Free Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc which is holding a hunger strike.

Ayer por la noche después de haber publicado mi blog, la música se inició fuera, y porque era bueno - una mezcla de rock clásico y el ucraniano, salí a disfrutar del concierto en la plaza principal, en frente del hotel.

Y esta mañana, para mi sorpresa, me dieron un desfile cuando entré por la puerta del hotel. Bandas de marcha, tocaba música, bailaban los bailarines - que fue abrumadora! Yo estaba agradecido y feliz. Estoy seguro de que la recepcionista se equivocó cuando dijo que era para los días de Lviv! De todos modos, hubo conciertos por doquier durante el día y la noche.

Esta tarde me reuní con Iván Svarnyk, ex director de los Archivos y ahora director de la Biblioteca, quien se dirigió a nuestro grupo de genealogía en Ottawa una serie de años y su hermano que Mykola enseña en la Universidad.

El día también tiene los partidos políticos a cabo, incluyendo el Tratado de Libre bloque de Yulia Tymoshenko, que está llevando a cabo una huelga de hambre.

Вчора ввечері після того, як я розмістив свій блог, музика почалася на вулиці, і тому, що це добре - суміш класичного року і українського, я вийшов, щоб насолодитися концертом на головній площі перед готелем.

А сьогодні вранці, на мій превеликий подив, вони дали мені парад, коли я вийшов з дверей готелю. Групи йшли, грала музика, танцюристи танцювали - це було приголомшливим! Я був вдячний і дуже щаслива. Я впевнений, що в приймальні було не так, коли вона сказала, що протягом кількох днів у Львові! У всякому разі, були концерти відбувається скрізь протягом дня і у вечірній час.

У другій половині дня я зустрівся з Іваном Сварнук, колишній директор архіву, а нині глава бібліотеки, яка виступила наша родовід групи в Оттаві кілька років тому, і його брат Микола, який викладає в університеті.

На наступний день також політичних партій в оренду, в тому числі безкоштовно Блоку Юлії Тимошенко, яка тримає голодовку.

2012.05.04 Friday - to Romania and Ukraine

I do not know if I said, but we (I) [the writer writes the history] quite enjoyed Milano.  It is the industrial and fashion capital of Italia and feels like a working city and it feels livable.  It is a beautiful city and has a different rhythm to it.

It was a good day if not a bit long.  Everything takes time.  I had packed last night - and that was a lot harder than it sounds - I will explain in person.  And Gail being at home will be reading this, and I will confess I was 2kg overweight - at least the luggage was - we won't talk about the excess pasta!  The Carpatair (a Romanian airline) has to fly through Romania to meet competition, etc. regulations.  So we flew into Timisoara and had a scheduled wait to change aircraft.  The new aircraft was a smaller SAAB 2000, a smaller craft with a 1 - 2 seat arrangement.  Why is this important - read on! There were two interesting women on board.  One did not seem to know where she was or where she was going and when we arrived, two Red Cross workers met the plane for her.  The other woman was overweight to say the least.  Once wedged in the seat, she had trouble with the seat-belt.  Near the end of the flight, she decided that she wanted to go to the bathroom.  She was not able to fit into it!

The new airport in Lviv is open - in time for Euro Cup 2012.  It is spacious and beautiful - although in a modern way, whereas the old one was classic, but unfortunately not very big.  The systems, passport control are all up to European standards with young and I image newly trained Passport Control and Customs Officers.  Even the uniforms have changed and the Kalashnikovs are gone.  All the way from the airport you can see the results of the infrastructure work going on.  A lot of the downtown has changed in the two years since we were here last.



Although we love Italian food it was nice to have something different - back to meat and potatoes!
