After breakfast, we walked to the coliseum under gray but dry skies and toured the ruins. They are incredible in size and the technology and architecture is amazing.. Lifts to bring the lions and gladiators to the main level as well as the ability to flood the arena in order to recreate famous naval battles. .
We then took the Metro to Vatican City, by which time the heavens had opened up. We then followed the throngs (99% of all the other tourists in Rome) (have we mentioned the crowds, and it's only April!) through the museum for 2 hours, shoulder to shoulder, being swept in the tide of humanity until we arrived at the Sistine Chapel mosh pit. The Vatican Museums contain incredible art work and statuary, but it is hard to appreciate them because of the crowd. We finally made our way to San Pietro (Saint Peter's), where the crowd had thinned and were able to enjoy the first among all churches. This is the largest church in the world and we saw the stone where Charlemagne was crowned among other things. We did not get a chance to see Joe (some call him Benedict), although we had sent him a note and let him know that there would be an opportunity for a photo op with some Islanders. (;-)
