2012.04.29 Sunday - Around Venezia

In the morning we toured the Doges Palace (the ruler of Venezia) and the centre of commerce, politics and justice.  The doge, although elected, was actually more than a king and closer to an Emperor considering they ruled or held sway over more than half the Mediterranean world.  The palace was more ornate and luxurious than most in other parts of Europe for the time period.  Gail particularly liked one of the marble fireplaces with two nude figures of Hercules holding up the mantle - more renovations?  The "Hall of the Grand Council" where the nobility met to elect the senate and Doge, holds 2600 people and contains the largest oil painting in the world.  Part of the tour included the "Bridge of Sighs" (where the convicted walked on their way to prison) and the prison itself.  This is the end of April and the prison was cold.  One could only image how cold it was in winter!



In the afternoon, we took a Vaporetto (water bus) ride up and down the canals to see the sights.  We then went to see the Ca' Rezzonico a grand canal palace which offers a glimpse into the life of the rich and famous from the 14th to the 18th centuries.



The crowds have been horrendous.  We are not sure if it is because of the May long weekend or if it always like this.  At about 1500h, it took us 15 minutes to cross a short footbridge.  The police were called out to clear off the footbridge near the "Bridge of Sighs" as a safety measure.  San Marco square was almost impossible to traverse and lines stretch everywhere for all the attractions.  When we returned after dinner, around 2130h, it was a different world.  A lot less crowded, hawkers selling glow stick helicopters which when launched by an elastic go quite high in the air creating a bright star display, orchestras played classical music at the caffes around the piazza, altogether an enjoyable experience.

Por la mañana visitamos el Palacio Ducal (el gobernante de Venecia) y el centro de comercio, la política y la justicia. El dux, aunque elegido, era en realidad más que un rey y más cerca de un emperador teniendo en cuenta que gobernó o tuvo influencia en más de la mitad del mundo mediterráneo. El palacio era más adornado y lujoso que la mayoría en otras partes de Europa para el período de tiempo. Gail ha gustado especialmente una de las chimeneas de mármol con dos figuras desnudas de Hércules levantando el manto - más reformas? La "Sala del Gran Consejo", donde la nobleza se reunieron para elegir el Senado y el Doge, tiene 2600 personas y que contiene la pintura de petróleo más grande del mundo. Por la tarde, tomamos un vaporetto (autobús acuático) subir y bajar los canales para ver los lugares de interés. Después fuimos a ver a Ca 'Rezzonico un palacio del Gran Canal, que ofrece una visión de la vida de los ricos y famosos desde el 14 hasta el siglo 18.

Las multitudes han sido terribles. No estamos seguros si es por el fin de semana de mayo de tiempo o si siempre es así. A eso de 1500h, nos tomó 15 minutos para cruzar una pasarela corta. La policía fue llamada a despejar el puente peatonal cerca del "Puente de los Suspiros", como una medida de seguridad. Plaza de San Marcos era casi imposible de atravesar y las líneas se extienden por todas partes para todas las atracciones. Cuando regresamos después de la cena, en torno a 2130h, que era un mundo diferente. Mucha menos gente, los vendedores ambulantes de venta de helicópteros Glow Stick que, cuando se lanzó por una elástica ir bastante alto en el aire creando una pantalla brillante estrella, orquestas tocaban música clásica en los alrededores de la plaza caffes, en conjunto una experiencia agradable.
